- Problem
How to set up Outlook Express 6 to recieve mail through the departmental server (mail.pa.msu.edu)
and send mail through either the departmental server (mail.pa.msu.edu) or MSUMail (mail.msu.edu).
- Solution
The following instructions are to set up Microsoft Outlook Express 6.x to receive IMAP mail from our departmental mail server and send mail from either our departmental server or the University's outgoing mail server. Users who travel a lot or are configuring their client for home use may wish to set their outgoing mail server to MSU Mail, whereas it is convenient for users on campus or at select remote locations (such as Fermi Lab) to use the departmental outgoing servers.
- Open Outlook Express 6
- In the menu bar, click Tools -> Accounts...

- On the "Internet Accounts" window that opens, click the Add button in the upper right hand corner, and a small menu will open. Click the one that reads Mail...

- An account wizard will start. Fill out your name in the Display Name field and click Next >

- Now, fill out your e-mail address in the E-mail Address field and click Next >

- On the "E-mail Server Names" window, change the dropdown menu (between the words My incoming mail server is a and server) to IMAP.
- In the next field [directly below, named Incoming Mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) Server] type mail.pa.msu.edu.
- The field directly under that [labeled Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server]needs either "mail.pa.msu.edu" (for departmental mail), or "mail.msu.edu" (for MSU Mail). Click Next >.

- In the "Internet Mail Logon" window, the first field will already be filled in, labeled Account Name. This is good. The second field, labeled Password, requires your departmental mail server password. Click Next > and then Finish.

- After you have clicked Finish, mail.pa.msu.edu is in the list on the left side of the Internet Accounts window. Click this account once, then click the Properties button to the right of it.

- In the "Mail.pa.msu.edu Properties" box that appears, click the IMAP tab
- In the "Root Folder Path" field, type mail and click OK.

- If you're using the departmental mail server to both receive and send mail, you are now done.
If MSUMail is your choice of outgoing mail server...
- mail.pa.msu.edu is in the list on the left side of the Internet Accounts window, which still should be open after you clicked Finish in "setting password" step. Click this account once, then click the Properties button to the right of it.

- There will be tabs at the top of this new window, click Advanced. Under the Outgoing Mail(SMTP) field there will be a checkbox labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL) The checkbox needs to be checked, and the port set to 465 if
checking the box does not automatically change it from the default of 25.

- Click OK. Click Close. Click Yes.
