Netscape 7.x Mail Configuration Settings

1. Problem
   

   How to set up Netscape 7.x Mail and Newsgroups to recieve mail through the departmental server (mail.pa.msu.edu) and send mail through either MSUMail (mail.msu.edu) or the departmental mail server (mail.pa.msu.edu).

2. Solution
   

   The following instructions are to set up Netscape 7.x to receive IMAP mail from our departmental mail server and send mail from either the University's outgoing mail server or our departmental server. Users who travel a lot or are configuring their client for home use may wish to set their outgoing mail server to MSU Mail, whereas it is convenient for users on campus or at select remote locations (such as Fermi Lab) to use the departmental outgoing servers.

   1. Open the "Netscape 7.x Mail and Newsgroups" program.
   
   
   2. In the menu bar, click Edit -> Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings...
      
   
   
   3. Now click the Add Account... button and a wizard will start. Choose the E-Mail option, and click Next >.
      
   
   
   4. In the "Identity" window, fill out the Your Name and the E-mail Address fields with the appropriate information and click Next >
      
   
   
   5. In the "Server Information" window, click the radio button next to the word IMAP and type mail.pa.msu.edu (for departmental mail) in the Incoming Server field.
      
   
   
   6. IF the Outgoing Server field is present driectly under the Incoming Server field, input either mail.pa.msu.edu or mail.msu.edu depending on whether you want your mail sent through the departmental mail server or MSU Mail, respectively.
   
   
   7. Click Next > three times. Click Finish.
      
   
   
   8. ELSE, IF the Outgoing Server field isn't there, click the the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option in the left menu of the "Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings" window. Under Server Name input either mail.pa.msu.edu or mail.msu.edu depending on whether you want your mail sent through the departmental mail server or MSU Mail, respectively.
   
   
   9. IF MSUMAIL is your choice for outgoing mail, click the radio button at the bottom labeled Always which is under Use secure connection (SSL)
      
   
   
   10. In the "Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings" window, highlight Server Settings in the left hand menu.
   
   
   11. Click the Advanced button, and in the "IMAP Server Directory" type mail/, uncheck the "Server supports folders that contain subfolders and messages" setting (mail.pa.msu.edu's folders may contain subfolders OR messages, not both at the same time) and the "Allow server to override these namespaces" setting; then click OK twice.

   If you are using mail.msu.edu as your outgoing mail server, please check the compatibility at http://help.msu.edu/mail/
   Remember: Verify that the entry you reference is the correct e-mail client, operating system and of the IMAP type.
