Microsoft Outlook XP & 2003 Configuration Settings

  1. Problem:

    How to:
Set up Outlook to recieve mail through the Physics and Astronomy departmental mail server and send mail through either the MSU Mail (mail.msu.edu) or the departmental server/kepler (mail.pa.msu.edu).

  2. Solution:

The following instructions are to set up Microsoft Outlook XP or 2003 to receive IMAP mail from our departmental mail server and send mail from either the University's outgoing mail server or our departmental server. Users who travel a lot or are configuring their client for home use may wish to set their outgoing mail server to MSU Mail, whereas it is convenient for users on campus or at select remote locations (such as Fermi Lab) to use the departmental outgoing servers.

    To add a new account
    1. Open Outlook
    2. In the menu bar, click Tools -> E-Mail Accounts
    3. Under the E-Mail heading, choose to Add a new e-mail account. Click Next in the lower right hand corner of this window.
    4. Choose IMAP from the choices listed in Server Type menu. Click Next in the lower right hand corner of this window.
    5. On the "Internet E-mail Settings" page, fill in the fields Your Name and E-Mail Address(user@pa.msu.edu) and the User Name field will automatically be filled in.
    6. In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) field, type "mail.pa.msu.edu"
    7. In the Password field, type the password you use to log in to the departmental (Kepler or Faraday) mail server.

    8. Outgoing Mail: Departmental Mail Server (Mail.pa.msu.edu)

      1. In the Outgoing mail server (STMP) field, type "mail.pa.msu.edu"
