SSH - Installing SSH to connect to remote computers

  1. Problem

    I want to use a secure connection to another computer.

  2. Solution

    Installing SSH for Windows is accomplished as follows:

    1. Download the installation file by clicking HERE. Alternatively, if the R: network drive is configured on your system, the file is also at R:\Support\Public\Windows_OS\Internet\SSH.

    2. Run the installation file that you have just downloaded.

    3. After the installation process is over, run SSH Secure Shell Client.

    To connect to a computer (e.g. Kepler):

    1. Click on File and select Connect...

    2. In the Host Name field, type mail.pa.msu.edu, or the name of the computer to which you are trying to make an SSH connection. Type your username in the Username field. When the program connects, you will be asked for your password.

    3. You can save the connection information by clicking on Profiles, selecting Add Profile..., giving your profile a name, and clicking on Add Current Connection to Profiles.
