Installing MiKTeX 2.6 on the Windows Platform

Problem:

I want to be able to write papers in LaTeX in Windows.

Solution:

  • Download either the basic installer or net installer from this website: http://miktex.org/2.6/Setup.aspx.
  • Run the downloaded setup.exe file.
  • When selecting a download mirror, first try ftp://indian.cse.msu.edu. Since this mirror is on campus, it should be much faster than the other sources. However, past versions of the installer have had difficulty installing from a source that was too fast, and so for packages which seem to be causing the installer to hang up, try downloading from a different mirror. Some of the other sources are also on the Internet2 backbone, in which case they'll be nearly as fast as the MSU server, so you may want to try some international servers if you're having this problem.
