- Problem
I want to use X-Win32 over a secure connection to another computer.
- Solution
Using X-Win32 with SSH is accomplished as follows:
-
If you haven't already done so, install X-win32 following the instructions provided HERE. Also, you will need to install SSH for Windows. The instructions can be found HERE.
-
Run SSH Secure Shell Client.
-
Click on Edit->Settings.
-
On the left hand side of the window, click on Tunneling and check the box marked Tunnel X11 Connections. Click on OK.
-
Now open X-Win32. DO NOT CONNECT TO A COMPUTER USING X-WIN32!!
-
Connect to the remote computer of your choice with the SSH client.
In the SSH window, you will now be able to run any program that you wish, and the connection will be tunneled to your computer via the SSH protocol. You can test this by running somthing simple, such as Xfig (e.g., type "xfig &" without the quotes from the command prompt). You do not need to/should not run setenv DISPLAY, as this will bypass the SSH connection and anything that you do will not be secure.
